Russians damaged Potemkin Palace in Dnipro with sabers

On Wednesday, 26 March, Russians damaged the Potemkin Palace in Dnipro during a drone attack. The city authorities plan to restore it and name it after Ukrainian Hetman Petro Sahaidachny.

This was announced by Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov.

He noted that Potemkin Palace, which is a historic building, is located in the city centre.

«"What kind of people do you have to be to shoot at the very centre of the city, at dense residential buildings and in the process destroy the historic building of the Grand Duke Potemkin Palace, which he built for Catherine II? The building is a symbol of imperial power», says Borys Filatov.

According to the cultural portal Experiment, the Potemkin Palace in Dnipro is one of the oldest architectural monuments in the city, built in the late 18th century by order of Prince Grigory Potemkin. The building was constructed as the residence of the Governor-General of the Novorossiysk Viceroyalty and was designed in the classicist style. The palace became a symbol of «imperial grandeur and cultural development of the region». Today, it functions as the Yuri Gagarin Student Palace of Oles Honchar Dnipro National University.

As a reminder, as of April 2024, Russians have destroyed or damaged 1,046 cultural heritage sites.
