This was reported during a briefing by Iryna Ponomariova, head of the Children’s Services Department of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, according to NikVesti.
According to her, in 2025, the child welfare services took part in 1,709 court hearings, where they defended the interests of children. Furthermore, following court rulings on claims brought by child welfare authorities, 142 parents were deprived of their parental rights in respect of 193 children.
«Following claims by child welfare authorities last year, 142 parents were deprived of their parental rights in respect of 193 children. A further 18 children were removed from their parents’ care by court order without the parental rights of 11 parents being revoked. So far this year, child welfare services have already participated in 546 court hearings, where they also represented the interests of children. Following claims by child welfare authorities, 25 parents have had their parental rights revoked in respect of 45 children. In addition, 70 children were removed from their parents’ care by court order without the parental rights of 12 parents being revoked,» said Iryna Ponomariova.
She added that not all parents cooperate with child welfare services, with the result that some children are left without parental care.
«Of course, efforts are being made to ensure that every parent facing difficult life circumstances has the chance to keep their child within the family. But, unfortunately, as the statistics show, not everyone cooperates, either with child welfare services or with social service providers. Some refuse social assistance and support. As a result, we have children who are granted the status of being deprived of parental care. At the same time, there is now an opportunity to work with families to prevent the removal of children, and we are actively introducing a service known as foster care,» noted Iryna Ponomariova.
It should be noted that there are foster families in 13 communities across the Mykolaiv region who help children in difficult life circumstances. Over the past year, 55% of children returned to their biological parents after foster care.
As a reminder, the Club of Foster Carers and Assistants of Mykolaiv Region was established in 2025.
