The water returns to the Kakhovka Reservoir

Water began to return to the Kakhovka Reservoir again. According to the latest satellite images, it can be seen that a large part of the previously dried area of the former reservoir is currently submerged under water.

This is reported by Texty.org.ua with reference to satellite images of this area.

Expert of the Ukrainian nature protection group, junior researcher of the Institute of Zoology named after I. Schmalhausen National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Hryhorii Kolomytsev said that the rise in the water level is due to the spring melting of snow.

«Here we clearly observe the rise of the water level, which corresponds to the situation of spring irrigation on the river floodplain [...] In the absence of artificial regulation of the water level, today we can observe on the territory of the former Kakhovka reservoir the same processes that occur on natural, unregulated floodplains by man rivers «Spring watering took place on these lands even before the construction of the hydroelectric power plant for thousands of years,» the expert explained.

We will remind you that on the night of June 6, the Russians blew up the Kakhovka HPP dam.

As a result, the territory of the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions began to be completely or partially flooded. People and animals from the Kherson region were evacuated by bus and train from Kherson to Mykolaiv and other cities.

As you know, Ukraine intends to rebuild the Kakhovka HPP, which was blown up by the Russian invaders. On July 18, the government approved an experimental restoration project.

According to the general director of Ukrhydroenergo Ihor Syrota, it will take six years to rebuild the Kakhovka HPP after its deoccupation. The station is planned to be made more powerful.

After the shallowing of the Kakhovka Reservoir as a result of the Russians undermining the Kakhovka HPP dam, the threat of desertification of the south of Ukraine appeared, which will have an impact on the global food system.

The reservoir stored 94% of the water that fed 30 melioration systems of the Kherson region, 74% of the melioration systems of the Zaporizhzhia region, and 30% of the Dnipropetrovsk region. It is noted that the lack of stable water supply, which was provided by the reservoir, will have a negative impact on the ecology of the south. It will also have a negative impact on agriculture.
