The Ingulskyi District Court in Mykolaiv found the man guilty of openly stealing goods from the ‘Aurora’ shop and sentenced him to 7 years and 8 months’ imprisonment.

This is stated in the court’s judgement dated 4 August.

According to the court documents, on 20 April at around 11.05 am, the man was in the ‘Aurora’ shop on Troitska Street. He took seven ‘Milka’ chocolate bars with ‘Raspberry and Cream’ filling, five ‘Millennium’ bars with peanuts and one ‘Milka’ bar with ‘Cheesecake’ flavour from the shelf. The total value of the goods was almost 1,500 hryvnias.

The man hid the chocolate under his clothes and left the shop. A shop assistant, who saw this on the CCTV cameras, ran after him, demanding that he return the goods. He then began to run away in the direction of Bashtansky Market, where he dropped some of the goods.

‘At the Bashtansky Market, he offered to sell the stolen chocolates to a girl he did not know. However, she refused, so he continued on to the public transport stop on Kosmonavtiv Street, where he boarded a minibus and went about his business,” the judgement states.

In its judgement, the court emphasised that it was precisely this circumstance that formed the basis for classifying his actions as robbery rather than theft. The defendant himself did not admit guilt. He claimed that he was not aware that he had been spotted by shop staff, and asked for his actions to be reclassified as theft. Furthermore, he stated that he had committed the offence whilst under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

In his statement, he also noted that he had eaten two chocolate bars and given the rest to an acquaintance.

The court sentenced the man to 7 years and 8 months’ imprisonment. Furthermore, the court partially upheld the civil claim brought by ‘Vygidna Pokupka’ Ltd. The convicted man is to pay 1,376 hryvnias in compensation for material damage. The four bars of chocolate, which were lost during the escape and subsequently handed over to the police, were returned to the shop.

As a reminder, in Mykolaiv, a 40-year-old repeat offender was sentenced to six years in prison for two thefts. The man stole electrical goods from a private house and later stole construction tools from a car. The total value of the stolen property exceeded 22,000 hryvnias.
