U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced a plan A and a plan B on the part of the U.S. side to end Russia's war against Ukraine.

He said this in an interview with CBS News.

«This is a complex, three-year war that has been going on on a very long military front, with great complexity. So no one is saying it's easy, but I want everyone to understand, this is the plan. Plan A is a ceasefire so that we can move on to Plan B, the second phase, which is to bring everybody to the table, perhaps through shuttle diplomacy, to find a way to end this war for good in a way that is sustainable, that takes into account everybody's needs, and so on,» Marco Rubio said.

He also emphasised that the second part of the plan will not be easy, but the United States «cannot even get to this second part until we pass the first part».

Marco Rubio noted that it is difficult to agree on a permanent end to the war while «they are shooting at each other».

According to him, this is why US President Donald Trump wants a ceasefire.

«This is something we are working on, assuming we can do it. It's not going to be easy... We're moving to the second stage, which is to discuss something longer and more permanent. This will be difficult. It will require a lot of hard work, concessions from both sides, but it has to happen. This war cannot continue. The President has made that clear, and he is doing everything he can to end it,» said Marco Rubio.

Marco Rubio called «promising» the meeting of Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff with Russian President Vladimir Putin on 13 March.

As a reminder, Steve Witkoff's trip took place after the Ukrainian delegation met with US Secretary of State Mark Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Volz in Saudi Arabia. During the talks, Kyiv supported the idea of a temporary ceasefire.

US President Donald Trump said that a «semi-ceasefire had been reached in the war between Russia and Ukraine», and it was now important that Moscow agreed to it. Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that the 30-day ceasefire would only work if the Kremlin agrees.

Moscow says it is not yet ready «to get ahead of itself» on the issue of ending hostilities. According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitrii Peskov, Putin's chief international policy adviser Yurii Ushakov and US National Security Adviser Mike Volz had a telephone conversation the day before. It is also reported that Vladimir Putin may hold an international phone call on the evening of 13 March.

At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that Vladimir Putin «is afraid to tell» US President Donald Trump directly that Russia wants to continue the war.
