Electricity production in Ukraine has more than halved since the start of the full-scale invasion.
This is stated in the article of the Financial Times, which refers to Ukrainian officials.
Before the full-scale invasion, Ukraine's domestic electricity production was about 55 gigawatts, one of the largest in Europe. Now, officials said, the capacity has fallen below 20 GW due to bombing or occupation of facilities.
It is noted that Russia's latest strikes are aimed at thermal and hydroelectric plants, which are much more difficult and expensive to restore. The attack, which took place on Saturday, June 1, was described by one Cabinet official as «devastating»: Ukraine lost 1.2 GW of electricity and the infrastructure needed to transport gas from underground storage facilities in the west was severely damaged.
In turn, the Secretary of the NSDC, Oleksandr Lytvynenko, said the government plans to create a decentralized energy system, the main of which will be a larger number of mini-power plants that are less vulnerable to attacks. Ukraine is also trying to expand the use of environmentally friendly technologies such as solar panels and wind turbines.
We will remind that on the night of Saturday, June 1, the enemy attacked energy facilities in the Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kirovohrad and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. DTEK reported «serious damage» at two TPPs.
