The Council of the European Union extended sanctions against Russia until February 25, 2025 for the occupation of the territories of Ukraine.

This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the Official Journal of the EU.

The EU Council imposed sanctions against Russia on February 23, 2022, and on October 6, 2022, in response to the Russian Federation's illegal annexation of parts of the Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia regions of Ukraine, the Council adopted an additional decision that expanded the geographic scope of the restrictions to include all non-government-controlled territories of Ukraine.

In addition, on December 14 and 15, 2023, the European Council confirmed Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, which is a clear violation of the UN Charter.

«As long as the illegal actions of the Russian Federation continue to violate the prohibition of the use of force, which is a serious violation of international law, it is advisable to maintain all measures currently introduced by the EU and take additional measures, if necessary. Therefore, the restrictive measures should be extended for another 12 months, until February 24, 2025,» the message reads.

In January, the Council of the European Union extended for another six months the restrictive measures created for certain sectors of the Russian economy.
