Culture and life of the Indians of North America: residents of Mykolaiv are invited to the exhibition of a private collector

In the Mykolaiv Regional Art Museum named after Vasyl Vereshchahin, the exhibition «Indians of the Prairies of North America» is in progress, which is the result of the works of a private collector, Dmytro Yeremenko.

Its opening took place on October 12, on Columbus Day, when the great navigator reached the island of San Salvador in the Bahamian archipelago, «NikVesti» reports.

At the exhibition, viewers will have the opportunity to view household items, clothing, weapons and cult items of North American Indians. Some of the exhibits are the result of historical reconstruction created by the hands of the collector. These items include women's and men's jewelry and accessories, as well as ritual items used for traditional dances.

— This is a hobby he (collector Dmytro Yeremenko — note) has had since childhood, from various small toys. Specifically, in this exhibition, he did something himself, he sewed himself, he is a tailor in general. And he bought something. He lives in Mykolaiv, but he has probably been to North America itself, — the museum employees said.

The exhibition reveals the history of Indians during the operation of the Hudson's Bay Company, the oldest British trading corporation, which was founded in 1670. Representatives of this company were engaged in the exchange of fur skins with the Indians for various goods.

According to the museum, the exhibition allows viewers to observe how the clothes of the Indians changed under the influence of the culture of Western Europe, combining Indian and European elements.

Visitors to the exhibition will also be able to learn about the life of cowboys, shepherds who grazed and protected cattle in North America. The exhibition includes a reconstruction of a tipi, a traditional portable dwelling of nomadic North American Indians, as well as objects they used in their homes.

We remind you that a printed catalog of digitized maritime works from the evacuated collection of the Ochakiv Museum of Painting, the Mykolaiv Art Museum and the Museum of Shipbuilding and Fleet was presented in Mykolaiv.
