In the Mykolaiv region, the number of people registered with cancer has increased by 17.9% over the past five years. At the same time, the incidence rate per 100,000 population has decreased by almost a third between 2020 and 2025.
This was reported by the director of the regional oncology centre, Maksym Beznosenko, in response to an information request from NikVesti.
According to the data, in 2020, 39,267 people were registered with a diagnosis of malignant neoplasms. By the beginning of 2026, this number had increased to 46,277 people, i.e. by 7,010 people, or 17.9% more than at the end of 2020.
The annual number of registered cases of morbidity also grew unevenly. In the Mykolaiv region, the number of new cases in 2020 was 3,519, and in 2025 — 2,728. In Mykolaiv, the corresponding figures for this period ranged from 1,776 to 1,238 cases.
The incidence rate per 100,000 people in the region was 351.1 in 2020 and 251.1 in 2025, which is 28.4% lower. In Mykolaiv, the rate decreased by 31.4% over the same period, from 373.4 to 256.2 per 100,000 population.
Thus, during preventive examinations, the percentage of newly diagnosed cancer patients decreased: 2017 — 42.7%, 2020 — 20.8%, 2022–2023 — only 1–1.5%.
The information request adds that the statistics for 2022–2025 are partially unreliable due to the impact of martial law, the temporary evacuation of a significant part of the population, limited access to medical facilities, the closure of enterprises and educational institutions, and the demographic crisis.
In three months of operation of the mammography machine at Maternity Hospital No. 3 in Mykolaiv, pathologies were detected in 50% of patients: what is known
On 22 October 2025, a breast disease diagnostic centre was opened at Maternity Hospital №3 in Mykolaiv. The facility was equipped with funds from the city budget, renovated and fitted with an Italian mammography machine. The machine allows for quick, painless and contraindication-free examinations.
This is the second location in the city where mammography examinations can be performed — the first machine is in operation at Hospital №5 in the Korabelnyi district.
In almost three months of operation of the mammography department at Maternity Hospital №3 in Mykolaiv, doctors have detected pathologies in more than half of the women examined. According to Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych, 483 women underwent examinations, and doctors detected pathologies in 279 of them.
It should be noted that the examination is recommended for all women over 40 years of age — once every two years or as directed by a doctor. Currently, the service is paid, but the institution is already preparing documents so that in 2026 it will become available under the medical guarantee programme.
