Yesterday, 22 April, the V. Vereshchahin Mykolaiv Regional Art Museum opened an exhibition in memory of Mykolaiv sculptor Inna Makushyna, entitled «Art Through Life», dedicated to her 85th birthday.
This was reported by a correspondent for NikVesti.
The artist’s sculpture «Mowgli and Bagheera», which has adorned the square in front of Mykolaiv Zoo since 1979, has become one of the city’s symbols.
Inna Makushuna was born in Mykolaiv. She was introduced to art by her father, who had no formal artistic training but was passionate about painting. Together they attended a fine arts studio.
Between 1961 and 1965, she studied at the V. Serov Leningrad Art College, and in 1966 she enrolled at the I. Repin Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. After graduating, Inna Makushina returned to Mykolaiv, where she began working at the Mykolaiv Art and Production Workshops. In 1977, she became a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine.
From 1991, she worked in the studio of her husband, Yurii Makushyn, an Honoured Artist of Ukraine. In 2011, she was awarded the title of «Honoured Artist of Ukraine».
The exhibition features the artist’s graphic, painting and sculptural works. A significant proportion of Inna Makushyna’s graphic works feature animalistic themes. The event’s host, Inna’s daughter-in-law Anna Makushyna, explained that throughout her life the artist created numerous sketches and studies of animals, which she later refined and transformed into independent creative works.
Inna Makushyna’s favourite drawing materials were coloured pencils. The artist’s pictorial legacy consists of still lifes, landscapes and portraits. She worked in oils in a realistic style, combining it with her own individual style.
During the formal part of the event, speeches were given by people who knew Inna Makushina personally. Among them were: Yurii Hranaturov — Deputy Head of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, Anton Tabunschyk — Chairman of the Mykolaiv Regional Council, Yevhen Horburov — Chairman of the Standing Committee on Science and Education, Innovation, Youth, Family and Sport, Culture and Spirituality, Yurii Liubarov — Head of the Department of Culture and Cultural Heritage Protection of the Mykolaiv City Council, Tamila Buhaienko — Chair of the Mykolaiv Regional Organisation of the Trade Union of State Institution Employees, Dmytro Artym — Chair of the Mykolaiv Organisation of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, Mykhailo Holdenberh — founder of the Mykolaiv Society for Jewish Culture, Nataliia Sapak — PhD in Art History, Vitalii Boichenko — Deputy Head of the Department of Culture, Nationalities and Religions of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration.
«They remembered Inna Viktorivna as a modest, kind-hearted and intelligent person who devoted her life to creativity. Her professionalism and contribution to the city’s artistic design were highly valued. She was also a caring wife, mother and grandmother,» said family friend Tamila Buhaienko.
All members of the Makushyn family, led by Yurii Andriiovych, were present at the exhibition opening. Inna Makushyna’s son, Viktor Yuriiovych, Honoured Artist of Ukraine and soloist with the Mykolaiv Philharmonic, performed classical pieces on the flute that his mother had greatly enjoyed.
The exhibition can be visited at the V. Vereshchahin Mykolaiv Regional Art Museum from 9:00 to 17:30, except Mondays, at the following address: 47 Velyka Morska Street.
