The rules for paying fares on public transport in Mykolaiv are changing. From now on, after scanning a QR code, passengers will have just 10 seconds to pay — otherwise they will have to scan it again.

This was announced during a live broadcast by Yurii Smetana, director of the municipal enterprise «Mykolaivelektrotrans», according to NikVesti.

According to him, the new measure is intended to prevent abuse, where passengers delay payment whilst waiting for a ticket inspector to check.

«After scanning, the passenger will have 10 seconds to validate the ticket. There will no longer be a situation where one can wait to see whether the ticket inspector comes or not. After 10 seconds, the QR code will no longer be valid, and it will need to be scanned again,» explained Yurii Smetana.

In addition, the company warns of the consequences of ticket forgery. If fake QR codes are detected, law enforcement will be called in to deal with the offenders.

«If instances of QR code forgery are detected, the State Security Service and the National Police will be called to draw up reports,» he noted.

Mykolaivelektrotrans also added that all ticket inspectors have special technical equipment for checking electronic tickets and can immediately determine whether a QR code is valid.

As a reminder, fares across all public transport in Mykolaiv have increased by an average of 33%. The new fares will apply on minibuses and buses from 27 April, and on electric transport from 4 May.

At the same time, a new ticket will be introduced on Mykolaiv’s electric transport from 4 May — the so-called «inspector’s ticket» for those who have not paid their fare. It will cost 300 hryvnias. If passengers refuse to pay, the police will be called.
