The head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, Vitalii Kim, has announced plans to find another international partner to help implement projects in the region.

Currently, the regional authorities are considering the United States, Europe, and Asia, Vitalii Kim said during a press conference on 30 December, NikVesti.

«There is a task of the Presidential Office to increase international support and cooperation, which we are fulfilling. At the moment, we are working with the Kingdom of Denmark, Lower Saxony, Japan, Poland, and the Czech Republic.

But we are still looking for additional partners. The task is not, let's say, just to sign a piece of paper, but to find a good partner so that it is beneficial not only in terms of social assistance to us, but also in terms of mutually beneficial relations. And these are primarily America, Europe, and Asian countries with which we are in the process. But we are only discussing projects,» said Vitalii Kim.

As of the end of 2024, international partners have provided €300 million in aid to Mykolaiv region, he said.

«The total figure of international aid from all countries is about €300 million. The Kingdom of Denmark is definitely the leader among them, supporting us year after year,» said the head of the RMA.

Denmark's cooperation with Mykolaiv

Back in March 2022, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking to the Danish Parliament, called on the country to take «patronage» over Mykolaiv after the end of the full-scale war.

At the end of August 2022, Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych and Danish Minister for International Development Flemming Møller Mortensen signed a memorandum of cooperation, which envisages joint work on developing reconstruction projects and attracting investors from different countries to rebuild Mykolaiv.

Denmark has promised to do everything possible to rebuild Mykolaiv. It also announced an aid package for the Mykolaiv region for special vehicles, medical equipment, and shelter repairs.

Subsequently, an office of the Danish Embassy in Ukraine was opened in Mykolaiv.

In early November, Denmark announced a new large-scale aid package for Ukraine worth €40.2 million. At the time, it was reported that the main focus of the aid package was on Mykolaiv and the region.

In January 2024, Denmark allocated another $21 million to rebuild the Mykolaiv region. In May, $17.2 million was allocated to rebuild destroyed educational institutions in the region, and in June, €33.5 million was allocated to restore infrastructure and improve access to water and electricity.

Overall, about 60% of the aid that Denmark provides to Ukraine goes to Mykolaiv and Mykolaiv region. Since the start of the full-scale war, the country has provided $118 million in aid to the region.

Ole Egberg Mikkelsen, Ambassador of Denmark to Ukraine, spoke about his vision of post-war reconstruction of Mykolaiv with pedestrian-friendly conditions and bicycle infrastructure.

While in Mykolaiv, the ambassador explained that Denmark would help Mykolaiv restore and modernise its shipbuilding facilities after the end of the full-scale war.

In particular, the country will rebuild the Mykola Arkas Lyceum while preserving its authentic appearance.

The ambassador also supported the idea of creating a Danish quarter or park in Mykolaiv, but this issue is still at the stage of an idea.

Denmark has also expressed interest in privatising the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant.

Deputy Mayor of Mykolaiv Serhii Korenev said that Denmark plans to help the city for the next 10 years.

Danish representatives are pleased «with the positive developments» in the city and announced a new phase of partnership, which involves the economic and social recovery of the city.

In September 2024, it became known that Mykolaiv region would receive €44 million in financial assistance from Denmark.

Denmark will also provide more than ₴150 million to restore houses in Mykolaiv's Korabelnyi district.
