The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, said that Russia is not serious about the peace talks taking place in Abu Dhabi. In her opinion, this is evidenced by the composition of the Russian delegation, which consists mainly of military personnel without decision-making powers.
Kaja Kallas said this before the start of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on 29 January.
«If we look at these talks, Russia is represented by military personnel who have no mandate to agree on peace as such. So it is clear that the Russians are not serious about this,» she stressed.
Kaja Kallas also drew attention to the fact that, in parallel with the negotiations, the Russian side continues its attacks on Ukraine. According to her, during the negotiations, the Russians are «bombing Ukrainians, trying to bomb and freeze them into submission».
In this context, the European Union is discussing additional energy support for Ukraine. Kaja Kallas noted that winter is extremely difficult, Ukrainians are experiencing serious difficulties, and the situation could escalate into a humanitarian catastrophe. She reiterated that Russia is «only pretending» to conduct peace talks.
Earlier, Volodymyr Zelensky shared the first details of the trilateral meeting that took place on 23 January in the United Arab Emirates. He stressed that in order to achieve a truce, Russia must ultimately «develop» a desire to end the war.
At the same time, Russia called the start of trilateral talks between expert groups from Ukraine, the United States and Russia a certain step forward in the negotiation process.
In addition, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine is preparing for new trilateral meetings with the participation of American and Russian delegations in the near future.
