Despite prolonged power outages and deteriorating weather conditions, schools in Mykolaiv and the region remain open but can switch to online learning if necessary.

This was announced by the head of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, Vitalii Kim, according to NikVesti.

According to the Mykolaiv Regional Centre for Hydrometeorology, variable cloudiness and no significant precipitation are expected in the Mykolaiv region in the coming days. The wind will be north-easterly, 6-12 m/s. On 17 January, the air temperature at night will be 8-13°C below zero, and during the day 4-9°C below zero. In Mykolaiv, the temperature at night will be 8-10°C below zero, and during the day 5-7°C below zero.

On 18–19 January, night-time temperatures are forecast to be 9–14°C below zero, and daytime temperatures 1–6°C below zero. No precipitation is expected, with a north-easterly wind of 7–12 m/s. However, due to the varying wind direction, the actual daytime temperature may feel like −15…−9°C.

In addition, due to the power shortage in Ukraine, Mykolaiv and the region have introduced power outage schedules, which can last up to 16 hours a day. During power outages, budgetary institutions are heated using generators and backup power supplies.

«Given the deterioration in the weather, we will not be closing schools, meaning that children will continue to study offline. They will be given the opportunity to switch to online learning in the event of deteriorating weather conditions or power outages,» said Vitalii Kim.

Local authorities emphasise that the decision to switch to distance learning will be made based on actual necessity, taking into account precipitation levels, air temperature and the stability of the power supply.

As is known, due to the sharp deterioration in weather conditions in January 2026, the Cabinet of Ministers recommended that educational institutions (schools, kindergartens, universities) switch to a remote format or extend the winter holidays until 19 January. The final decision will be made by local authorities based on weather forecasts and the security situation.
