A draft plan for adaptation to climate change has been prepared in Mykolaiv. It still needs to be finalised, taking into account proposals from departments and municipal enterprises, and submitted to deputies for approval.
This was announced during a staff meeting on Monday, 3 March, according to NikVesti.
Artem Vashchylenko, head of the expert and public council, noted that Mykolaiv is the first city in Ukraine to develop a climate change adaptation plan.
«Today, we are the first city in Ukraine that has managed to get together and prepare such a document. Currently, only the city of Kyiv is moving in this direction. As of now, no other territorial community has received such a document,» Artem Vashchylenko assured.
In two weeks, the relevant departments and municipal enterprises must submit their proposals for the measures planned in the programme. After that, the working group will meet again to finalise and submit the final draft to the city council.
«This is not only an additional step towards confirming the competitiveness of the Mykolaiv community. It is an opportunity to attract funding, and the existence of an adaptation plan makes it possible to apply for climate investments. We are talking about both international funds and the state budget. Therefore, we understand the importance of this document,» added the head of the expert and public council.
It was previously reported that the development of the Mykolaiv Climate Change Adaptation Plan is in its final stages. The main analytical block has already been completed, and the document is currently undergoing internal approval.
In addition, as part of the preparation of the Plan, an online survey was conducted, in which 1,448 residents took part. The data obtained will be taken into account when forming the final list of measures in the Plan.
The survey showed that Mykolaiv residents believe that the climate in the city has changed significantly, with half of those surveyed noticing these changes only in the last 3–5 years. City residents have begun to experience more frequent health problems.
Almost 60% of respondents reported headaches, weakness and insomnia during periods of heat and air pollution. Another 40% reported exacerbation of allergies, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.
It should also be noted that climate change and a critical decline in water balance could render half of the country's agricultural land unsuitable for cultivation. By 2050, the drought zone will cover millions of hectares.
