A social adaptation centre has opened in the Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv with the support of the Danish government and UNDP.
This was reported by a correspondent for NikVesti.
Three areas have been set up within the centre. English and Ukrainian language classes, art therapy, psychological training sessions and masterclasses are held here, and there is also a computer room. The centre is open to anyone who wishes to visit, including people with disabilities, older people, families of fallen soldiers and families with children.
Olena Verenkova, head of the Korabelnyi District day care centre, explained that the space was created on the basis of the existing centre.
«We have officially opened a social adaptation space based on the day care centre. Thanks to support from the UNDP and funding from the Danish government, we were able to carry out a major refurbishment of the premises. We also received modern furniture and equipment, which allows us to organise learning, development and socialisation more effectively. After all, a strong individual means a strong community,» said Olena Verenkova.
She added that the centre hosts meetings with charitable foundations and community organisations, collaborates with the police, provides free legal advice and helps people, particularly with the restoration of damaged property.
«In Denmark, people work and pay taxes, and these funds help Ukraine — both in defence and in the reconstruction of cities. I remember this building back in 2022–2023, when humanitarian aid was being distributed here. There were many elderly people here at the time. Today, this centre has been given a new lease of life thanks to the cooperation and support of international partners,» said Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych.
According to the mayor, there is a growing need for social services in the city, particularly for older people. Oksana Yelchieva, Director of the Department of Social Protection of the Population at the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, added that such facilities are increasingly being opened in communities.
«With every passing day, the number of people in need of social assistance is growing due to the war. It is precisely these modern spaces that enable specialists to work effectively with people. It is important that they are opening not only in large cities but also in communities,» she noted.
The centre is located at 301/2 Bohoiavlenskyi Avenue.
