Soldiers of the Mykolaiv brigade of the TDB stumbled upon an archaic burial ground during the construction of fortifications

During the construction of fortifications in southern Ukraine, soldiers of the 123rd Territorial Defence Brigade made an unexpected archaeological discovery.

This was reported by the brigade's press service.

An excavator discovered the amphora during excavation work and, together with a fellow soldier who is interested in history, handed over the discovery to the museum «Staroflotski Kazarmy».

The museum's experts found that it was a Corinthian amphora used in funerary rituals in the VI-V centuries B.C. The study of the site confirmed that the military had stumbled upon an archaic burial ground of historical value.

Another unique find is an oinochoi, an ancient Greek jug used during ritual feasts.

«These are ritual items created specifically for burials and brought from Greece. It is important that the vessels are intact, without damage, which indicates the high social status of the buried,» explained Oleksandr, a former archaeologist, lecturer at the Sukhomlynskyi Mykolaiv National University and now a military man.

Along with the artefacts, the military handed over the bones of the buried people to the museum, which will allow historians to better study the ancient culture of the region.

As a reminder, Kherson craftswoman Yuliia Bondarenko recreated a unique embroidered shirt from the Left Bank of Kherson region, which was in the collection of the famous ethnographer Viktor Kysil. The embroidery pattern will be available for a donation to the Ukrainian army.
