In the Mykolaiv region, rescuers helped ambulances more than 20 times due to icy roads, which prevented them from continuing their journey due to bad weather. Most often, rescuers went to help in the Bashtansky and Voznesensky districts.
This was reported by Artem Vahin, spokesperson for the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Mykolaiv region, on the Radio Day programme , according to NikVesti.
As is known, a total of 7,720 tonnes of sand and salt mixture has been spread in the region since 26 January. Every day, 278 road workers were involved, along with 104 units of special equipment and more than 120 units of equipment from businesses and communities.
«During the period of icy conditions, the State Emergency Service units are working in an enhanced mode. Over these days, rescuers have helped emergency medical vehicles carrying patients more than 20 times, as they were unable to continue their journey due to difficult weather conditions. Most often, such assistance was provided in the Bashtanka and Voznesensk districts of the region,» said Artem Vahin.
In turn, Vitalii Dushko, spokesperson for the Mykolaiv region patrol police, noted that there had been no increase in road accidents.
«The difficult weather conditions did not significantly affect the accident rate, and there has been no sharp increase in road accidents. Patrol officers monitor road conditions around the clock, both in the city and on highways. If there is black ice somewhere, they immediately notify the duty station, which contacts the road services. Then, equipment is dispatched to spread grit. If necessary, patrol officers can temporarily restrict traffic on the dangerous section until special equipment arrives. In general, this is normal work in such weather conditions,» said Vitalii Dusko.
We would like to add that earlier, the head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, Vitalii Kim, reported that a total of more than 7,000 tonnes of sand and salt mixture had been spread on the region's roads.
«I don't remember such weather, when it rained and immediately froze, for about ten years. Despite the fact that our head of the Road Service has been dismissed, I believe that we have done a good job — we are among at least the top five of the 22 regions that have coped,» said Vitalii Kim.
Black ice in Mykolaiv
From 26 January, there was black ice in Mykolaiv. In particular, on 26 January, 13 people were admitted to hospital with injuries caused by black ice. By 27 January, this number had risen to 60.
Employees of the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks reported that they were working in an enhanced mode due to the icy conditions. They used 22,700 kilograms of anti-icing mixture to treat sidewalks and pedestrian areas.
Later, the first deputy mayor of Mykolaiv, Vitalii Lukov, stated that there were not enough municipal workers to combat the icy conditions in Mykolaiv. Currently, municipal workers are sprinkling salt and sand on the city streets, but only near public transport stops and in areas with large crowds of people. The city authorities are also calling on local businesses to sprinkle salt and sand on the areas adjacent to their premises.
Vitalii Lukov also urged Mykolaiv residents to wait out the bad weather at home if possible.
Later it became known that 98 people had been admitted to hospital over the last three days due to the icy conditions, most of whom had fallen on slippery pavements.
In the Mykolaiv region, utility services and the police worked around the clock to eliminate the effects of the icy conditions. In total, 7,720 tonnes of sand and salt mixture have been spread in the region since 26 January. Every day, 278 road workers were on duty, 104 pieces of special equipment were involved, as well as more than 120 pieces of equipment from businesses and communities.
Due to the difficult weather conditions, rescuers in Mykolaiv region went out six times to help people who found themselves in difficult situations on the roads.
According to Vitalii Kim, head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, weather conditions were extremely difficult, with rain turning to ice almost instantly.
He added that icy conditions were reported throughout the country. In the Mykolaiv region, only one road was temporarily closed at night, and traffic delays lasted about an hour and a half. Currently, all roads have been gritted, with the exception of the frontline areas — Ochakiv and Kutsurub communities, where there is still ice on the roads.
