There are currently enough specialists to support veterans in Mykolaiv, but after the war ends, many more may be needed. The city is preparing for a situation where the number of veterans will increase significantly and they will need systematic support and assistance.

This was stated by Viktor Moiseiev, director of the Mykolaiv City Centre for Veterans Support, on the programme Dialogue on the MART TV channel.

According to him, a department of specialists supporting veterans has been operating at the city's Veterans Support Centre since February 2025. Currently, nine people are employed in the department, but by the end of the year, the staff is planned to be increased to 12 specialists.

«We are just getting ready, working out the model and mechanisms of operation. After the victory, the number of veterans will be significantly higher, and then the question of increasing the number of specialists will arise,» said Viktor Moiseiev.

He explained that specialists are not distributed evenly across districts, but according to need. More specialists work in locations with the largest flow of people and requests from veterans and their families.

In particular, their workplaces are located in three administrative service centres — in the Central, Zavodskyi and Korabelnyi districts. Specialists also work in the departments of the TRC and SS (territorial centre for recruitment and social support), in the regional office of the Pension Fund, directly in the veterans' support centre and in other institutions where military personnel and their families most often seek assistance.

According to Viktor Moiseiev, a veteran support specialist is the first person to meet a defender or their family after they ask for help. They are not directly a lawyer or psychologist, but they are knowledgeable about various issues and help coordinate the person: they explain where to go, what documents are needed, and also contact the necessary specialists and check whether the person has received the necessary service.

«If the issue can be resolved immediately, the specialist helps on the spot. If a lawyer or psychologist is needed, they don't just provide contact details, but communicate with the specialist and accompany the process to ensure that the person actually receives help,» explained the director of the veterans' support centre.

According to the recommendations of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, one specialist can assist approximately 100 people. At the same time, the duration of such support depends on the needs of a particular veteran or their family members: sometimes one visit is enough, and sometimes the assistance can last much longer.

We would like to remind you that a meeting between Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych and representatives of veterans' organisations took place in Mykolaiv. The mayor stated that veterans returning to the city need support and access to social assistance.
