Following the winter floods in the Southern Bug, the water quality has changed. It has become cloudy, so residents of Pivdennoukrainsk were asked not to drink tap water without boiling it first.
The executive committee of the Pivdennoukrainsk City Council informed NikVesti of the current water situation.
Drinking water is supplied to Pivdennoukrainsk by «VP Pivdennoukrainsk NPP». It is also responsible for the quality of the water that residents receive via the centralised water supply system. The water is transported by the municipal enterprise ‘Heat Supply and Water and Sewerage Services’ of the Pivdennoukrainsk City Council.
On 18 March, the Pivdennoukrainsk NPP informed the executive committee that the condition of the water in the Southern Bug River had deteriorated sharply. The cause cited was flooding in the river. Residents were therefore warned that it was best not to consume tap water without boiling it first.
However, as early as 20 March, the executive committee was informed that the water was safe to drink without settling or boiling. As of today, the water quality meets sanitary requirements.
«Drinking water is safe to consume without prior settling or boiling,» the executive committee of the Pivdennoukrainsk City Council reported.
At the same time, in response to a question regarding the provision of alternative sources in the event of a deterioration in water quality, the South Ukrainian City Council stated that there are 13 vending machines selling purified drinking water in the city and that it can be purchased in shops.
As a reminder, in mid-February it was reported that the quality of drinking water in Pivdennoukrainsk had temporarily deteriorated. Although no dangerous bacteria were found in the water, there were deviations in other indicators.

When will the new water treatment plants start operating?
The new water treatment facilities for the centralised water supply in Mykolaiv are promised to be launched as early as January 2026, but they are expected to be fully operational later. They were built using funds saved during the construction of the new water pipeline.
Initially, the plan was to take out an EIB loan to build the new water treatment facilities for Mykolaiv, with Denmark providing the remainder as a grant. The project was expected to take several years to complete and was intended to help supply the city with water meeting European standards.
However, Serhii Sukhomlyn, head of the State Agency for Reconstruction, later stated that the idea had been abandoned. It was decided to build the new water treatment facilities using state funds – those saved during the construction of the city’s new water pipeline.
However, Mykolaiv’s mayor, Oleksandr Sienkevych, supports the modernisation of the new water treatment facilities using a loan from the European Investment Bank, but believes that the state should pay for it.
