Photo: Mayor Oleksandr SienkevychMykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych said that due to icy conditions, public transport cannot travel on slippery roads, which residents have complained about, although these areas should be serviced by the regional repair service.
He said this on 2 February during a staff meeting at the Mykolaiv City Council, according to NikVesti.
According to the mayor, problems arise on routes where autonomous trolleybuses and buses run through the city.
«Where we have autonomous trolleybus routes and bus routes, in case of traffic problems, I ask you to coordinate your actions with the radio and also with the relevant deputy. We have already had a case where a driver was unable to drive on a slippery road, which is a regional road and should be serviced by the maintenance service,» explained Oleksandr Sienkevych.
According to NikVesti, this refers to the Matviivka microdistrict in the Central District, where a few days ago, due to icy conditions, public transport was unable to take residents home in the evening and was forced to shorten the route to the Atelier stop on Heroes of Ukraine Avenue. The road in the neighbourhood is maintained by the Infrastructure Restoration and Development Service in the Mykolaiv region.
Oleksandr Senkevych reported that there are several roads within Mykolaiv that belong to the city but are maintained by the regional restoration service. These include Heroes of Ukraine Avenue, Veselynivske and Odeske Shosse, Malko-Tyrnivska Street, as well as roads passing through Velyka Korenykha and Mala Korenykha.
The mayor stressed that the residents of Mykolaiv do not distinguish which authority is responsible for a particular road and address their complaints to the city authorities.
«Residents don't understand who is responsible for this. They write to the mayor asking why the roads are not cleared. Public transport runs on these streets — both trolleybuses and buses. Therefore, I ask not just to deviate from the routes, but to raise this issue. If it is not resolved, I will bring it to the attention of the head of the regional military administration, Vitalii Kim. Because, again, it is not the image of a particular mayor that suffers, but that of the entire government. No one will figure out whose road it is — people will simply be dissatisfied with the quality of the government's work,» the mayor said.
Earlier, Oleksandr Sienkevych called on the heads of condominiums, management companies and businesses to quickly clear and grit the paths near the adjacent territories.
In particular, eight combined road machines and one loader from the ELU Avtodorig municipal enterprise are on duty on the streets of Mykolaiv. The situation on the roads is monitored by the dispatcher on duty.
In total, municipal services in Mykolaiv used 207 tonnes of anti-icing mixture per day and cleared the contact networks for electric transport.
Black ice in Mykolaiv
This week, there is ice on the roads in Mykolaiv. Forecasters predict that the bad weather will continue. In particular, on 28 January, light rain with wet snow is expected, and during the day — ice and heavy fog.
On 26 January, 13 people were admitted to hospital with injuries caused by icy conditions. As of 27 January, this number had risen to 60.
Employees of the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks reported that they are working in an enhanced mode due to the icy conditions. They used 22,700 kilograms of anti-icing mixture to treat sidewalks and pedestrian areas.
Later, the first deputy mayor of Mykolaiv, Vitalii Lukov, stated that there are not enough municipal workers to combat icy conditions in Mykolaiv. Currently, municipal workers are sprinkling salt and sand on the city's streets, but only near public transport stops and in areas with large crowds of people. The city authorities are also calling on local businesses to sprinkle salt and sand on the areas adjacent to their premises.
Vitalii Lukov also urged Mykolaiv residents to wait out the bad weather at home if possible.
Later it became known that 98 people had been admitted to hospital over the last three days due to icy conditions, most of whom had fallen on slippery pavements.
