Denmark will allocate €400 million for the construction of the Tylihul wind farm in Mykolaiv region.

According to the Danish Embassy in Ukraine, this is the largest private investment in the country since the full-scale invasion.

«A financial guarantee from the Danish Export and Investment Fund (EIFO) will support the expansion of the Tylihul wind farm in southern Ukraine. The Danish government, through the Danish Export-Import Fund (EIFO), is now providing a financial guarantee of DKK 3 billion (EUR 400 million) for the construction of Ukraine's largest wind energy project and its installation of Vestas wind turbines. The financing is part of a broader strategy to restore Ukraine's critical infrastructure, which focuses on environmentally sustainable energy solutions», the statement said.

As we previously reported, when it reaches its full capacity, Tyllihul WEP will produce 1.7 TWh of electricity per year. This is enough to provide electricity to 900,000 Ukrainian homes.

«Denmark's experience in implementing environmental initiatives has the potential to make a decisive contribution to Ukraine's recovery and, consequently, to its fight for freedom. With our substantial financial guarantees, together with EIFO and Vestas, we are providing critical infrastructure for the country, which is crucial in the context of the ongoing war. All of this is aimed at replacing Ukraine's dark present with a green future», added Morten Bødskov, Minister of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs of Denmark.

Denmark's cooperation with Mykolaiv

Back in March 2022, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking to the Danish Parliament, called on the country to take «patronage» over Mykolaiv after the end of the full-scale war.

At the end of August 2022, Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych and Danish Minister for International Development Flemming Møller Mortensen signed a memorandum of cooperation. It provides for joint work on the development of reconstruction projects and the involvement of investors from different countries in the restoration of Mykolaiv.

In January 2023, representatives of Denmark and Ukraine met in Mykolaiv to plan the city's further recovery. And in July, the Danish Minister announced an aid package for the Mykolaiv region for special vehicles, medical equipment and shelter repairs.

In September last year, after a meeting with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the opening of the Danish Embassy's office in Mykolaiv.

And in early November, Denmark announced a new large-scale aid package for Ukraine worth €40.2 million. At the time, it was reported that the main focus of the aid package was on Mykolaiv and the region.

In January 2024, the Kingdom of Denmark allocated another $21 million to rebuild the Mykolaiv region. In May, $17.2 million was allocated to rebuild destroyed educational institutions in the region, and in June, €33.5 million was allocated to restore infrastructure and improve access to water and electricity.

Overall, about 60 per cent of Denmark's aid to Ukraine goes to Mykolaiv and Mykolaiv region, said Ole Egberg Mikkelsen, the Danish ambassador to Ukraine. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Denmark has provided $118 million in aid to Mykolaiv region. He also stated his vision of the post-war reconstruction of Mykolaiv with pedestrian-friendly conditions and bicycle infrastructure.

While in Mykolaiv, the ambassador explained that Denmark would help Mykolaiv restore and modernise its shipbuilding facilities after the end of the full-scale war.

In particular, the country will rebuild the Mykola Arkas Lyceum while preserving its authentic appearance. As of September 2023, Ukrainian architects have presented Ole Egberg Mikkelsen with options for reconstruction.

The ambassador also supported the idea of creating a Danish quarter or park in Mykolaiv, but this issue is still at the idea stage.

Denmark has also expressed interest in privatising the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant.

Mykolaiv has also completed painting a mural in honour of friendship and partnership with the Kingdom of Denmark. It was unveiled on the anniversary of the founding of Mykolaiv.

In turn, Deputy Mayor of Mykolaiv Serhii Koreniev said that Denmark plans to help the city for the next 10 years.

On 17 September, representatives of Denmark said in Mykolaiv that they were pleased «with the positive developments» in the city and announced a new phase of partnership, which includes economic and social recovery of the city.

Also on 17 September 2024, it became known that Ukraine had received the 4th and 5th financial aid packages from Denmark worth 64 million euros, 44 of which will be allocated to Mykolaiv region.

In October, it was reported that Denmark would provide more than ₴150 million to restore houses in the Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv.

In November, the mayors of Bashtanka and Pervomaisk travelled to Denmark together with the head of Mykolaiv Regional State Administration. They presented investment proposals from their communities to the partners.
